Everything about this case screams “don’t do this”.. Yet the outcome was one of the most impressive all-time Aussie performances. High-level teamwork. Elite decision-making. PRONE TKEs: Following up on my Swiss Ball Leg Press exercise I shared yesterday, here's another early rehab option that encourages the knee into terminal knee extension (TKE) early after ACL surgery or knee injury. My advice: 3x15-20reps (holding each rep for 3-5seconds), 2-3x per day in the first 2 weeks or so post-op. For more information on ACL rehabilitation, download your copy of the Melbourne ACL Rehabilitation Guide by clicking on the link below https://www.premax.co/au/all/acl-rehab-prot

RETURN TO SPORT TESTING: The single leg hop test is just one way to determine someone's readiness to return to sport. A difference of no more than 10% between legs is recommended, and consistent performance scores across a number of hop tests (triple hop, cross-over hop and 6m timed hop) will give the clinician and athlete greater confidence that they'll make a successful return to sport without re-injury - especially in the case of ACL reconstruction. But is the distance hopped and limb symmetr

In addition to an orthopedic knee assessment, a series of single leg hop tests, a quads/hamstrings strength assessment and an agility T test, single lands from a height should also be considered when testing a patient's/athlete's readiness to return to sport following injury, especially ACL reconstruction. As you can see, this "athlete" needs a lot more single leg training on his L side. This is a nice example showing that, just because your pain is gone, just because you have normal range of mo

Do you assess more than static balance? Don't forget that "balance" also includes the vestibular system; so consider adding this head turning exercise and/or assesment (*pun intended) into your post-op ACLR rehab considerations! Terminal Knee Extensions (TKEs) variations Getting the knee actively into terminal knee extension is a key milestone during the first few weeks following ACLR. It's also important to maintain this ability throughout rehab. Isolating the quads via open kinetic chain exercise variations will help, as will exercises like TKEs. Here's 2 options. Personally, I like the 2nd option more (TKE hip lock), as its got great "bang for buck" for being a true unilateral exercise, and getting the glutes to cont

💪Isometric knee extensions 🦵 The peak angle of force production for the quads is 60deg knee flexion. So in patients who need to hit the quads, but can't do full ROM exercises due to pain or post-op restrictions, I find this to be a cracker of an exercise to get them through the rough days until they can start lifting heavier loads and/or are able to start moving loads through full/restricted knee ROM. I prescribe 2-3 sets x10 reps of around 10 sec holds, contracting the quads as hard they can

Pre-op ACL reconstruction strengthening - it's not a waste of time! Did you know that once the knee has settled following ACL injury, a 5 week strength, plyometric and balance program (prior to surgery in those choosing to have a reconstruction) has been shown to significantly improve post-op knee function and have higher return to sport rates in those who didn't do the program? In a study by Failla et al (2016), once the knee had "settled" post ACL injury (effusion resolved, ROM restored, quads

Are your crappy sleep habits making you injured & sick? (asking for a friend... me) 🤔 New Podcast ep drops tomorrow! We tackled the beast that is SLEEP - specifically how it impacts, well, everything: injuries, getting sick, brain function... the whole shebang. I went into it thinking I knew a fair bit, but prepping this episode was... illuminating. And slightly concerning for my own habits. 😅 Here are 5 key things that jumped out, even to a sleep-deprived physio like me: Injury Risk Isn't Sub

SS Knowledge TV on Instagram: "Dying to Prove the Earth Is Flat! This video tells the shocking true story of Mike Hughes, an American amateur rocket builder who risked—and ultimately lost—his life attempting to prove that the Earth is flat. Mike Hughes believed that governments and scientists were deliberately misleading the public about the shape of the Earth. Determined to verify the truth with his own eyes, he designed and built steam-powered homemade rockets and personally piloted them, desp
