Joseph Richard Winters (1824–1916) was an African-American inventor, abolitionist, and poet best known for patenting a wagon-mounted fire-escape ladder in 1878 and later improving the design for use on buildings. A resident of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, he was active in the Underground Railroad and even helped arrange a meeting between Frederick Douglass and John Brown. | Black ExcelList
